I’ve visited Fredericksburg several times now (so this guide is years in the making), and it is one of my favorite weekend getaways! It’s the perfect place to visit with family, friends, or for a couple’s trip. It has become a very popular spot for birthdays and bachelorette parties. The town was founded back in 1846 and still has so much history to it from buildings, to museums, to restaurants showcasing the German heritage. With vineyards, shopping, live music, and more, there is always something to do in the quaint town of Fredericksburg, TX! Fall is the most popular time to visit with cooler temperatures.
WHERE TO STAY IN FREDERICKSBURG:
There are SO many cute Airbnb’s in Fredericksburg, and this one pictured above is where we stayed for our anniversary weekend. It was the perfect secluded spot for two, still close to town, and had amazing features such as a hot tub, fire pit, grill, hammock, and more! There are also some great inns and cottages in the area to stay at, such as Porch Light Fredericksburg (on the bucket list but books out so far in advance), or Hoffman Haus. A new glamping resort, Onera, just opened and has super unique stays like treehouses and bubble domes! There are many ranches and properties just outside of Fredericksburg that look amazing if you want a true Hill Country experience. I’m also dying to check out the new Albert Hotel opening in 2023 that will be a luxury hotel in the heart of town.
WHAT TO DO IN FREDERICKSBURG:
Wineries:
Fredericksburg is known for it’s wineries with over 50 vineyards and tasting rooms. If it is your first time visiting, a good option would be doing the 290 Wine Shuttle. It’s a hop on hop off shuttle that stops at all the main wineries along 290, for $40 a person. While there are plenty of Ubers in Fredericksburg, there can sometimes be surges so if you have a large group you may also consider booking private transportation! We had a group of 16 once and used Texas Tipsy Tours for a party bus/van and it was just $45/person for 5 hours! If you are doing the vineyards along 290, I recommend picking 4-5 to stop at so you have time to do a tasting at each (take note that most of them close by 5pm, so you will want to start by noon). Our favorties along this route are Barons Creek (need reservation for groups), Becker Vineyards, Slate Theory, Signor Vineyards, 4.0 Cellars, and Messina Hof.
Another option if you are able to venture a little further out, is Augusta Vin Winery! This was my first time visiting and it’s now probably my favorite! It has over 100 acres of vineyards, making it the largest in the Hill Country. The property is beautiful and they have live music on weekends.
Breweries/Distilleries:
Don’t worry, if you’re not a huge fan of wine, there are still plenty of options in Fredericksburg! We loved Aldstat Brewery, which is now ranked the 4th top brewery in America! Not surprised because it is a massive property with beautiful German architecture, and a large courtyard with live music. We also got a chance to check out the Elk Store in town which had whiskey, bourbon, and moonshine tastings. If you are able to drive a bit further, check out Hye Cider Company or Garrison Brothers nearby in Hye, TX.
Live Music:
There is live music on almost every corner in Fredericksburg on the weekends. They have over 400 events and festivals a year. Check out this website to see a schedule of what concerts are playing during your visit. We went to a concert at Rockbox Theatre during our visit to see Prophets and Outlaws, a Texas country band. If you are willing to make the trek, Luchenbach, TX is a huge music town and has big names preform every now and then!
Shopping:
Definitely save some time on your trip to just wander on Main St. and check out all the boutiques and shops! From antique stores to high end leather goods, you will want to pop in almost every store! Some of my favorites are Vaudeville, Zertz, Big Pop’s Popcorn, and Headquarter’s Hats (which has the largest stock of Lucchese boots in the world)!
Nature:
If you’re looking for ways to burn off all the wine you drank, make some time in your itinerary to do a hike before you head home! Enchanted Rock is just 20 minutes from Fredericksburg and is a must-see! It has over 8 miles of hiking trails and a 425 ft. granite mountain. The hike to the top is quick but can be challenging since it is pretty steep. I recommend doing it early in the morning during warm months or at sunset for amazing views. Since I’ve already done Enchanted Rock a few times, this trip we wanted a closer quick hike so we went to Cross Mountain Park. It was a quick, easy hike up from where you park, but had amazing views at a 1951 ft. elevation.
WHERE TO EAT IN FREDERICKSBURG:
There are so many amazing restaurants in Fredericksburg that it can be hard to choose! Another idea would be cooking/grilling out a meal at your Airbnb. There is an HEB in town so it’s easy to grab groceries! Here are my favorite restaurants:
I hope this guide helped you learn more about Fredericksburg! It’s a must-go place in Texas and I hope to continue visiting each year!
